Chapter Eight
Bishop glanced across the rich green lawn to the front porch of Synn’s house. Huddled in blankets, Cooper and Craig sat side-by-side on the matching rocking chairs, their hands connected between them.
Over the last few days, Bishop had come to realize more than those hands connected the two men. Twins, they were the same yet very different. Both had long blond hair, but Cooper’s was longer and Craig’s lighter, the man having spent more time out in the sun. They had the same light brown eyes, but Cooper’s were haunted, and at times, the agony of overflowing emotions broke Bishop’s heart. Craig’s eyes sometimes showed the physical pain he still felt from the gunshot wound he’d received the year before.
It was their stature that set them apart the most. Bishop learned that during their mother’s pregnancy, Cooper’s umbilical cord had become tangled. He didn’t receive the full supply of nutrients he needed to grow normally. The result was Craig had been a healthy eight pounds at birth and Cooper had been a scrawny four pounds.
Cooper never caught up with his brother. Bishop got the feeling that Cooper hadn’t had an easy time going up on the farm he and Craig were raised on. Being shorter, fine-boned, and almost fragile, Cooper wouldn’t be able to endure the hard work expected of him. Just from the comments Bishop had heard between the siblings, Cooper withdrew and tried his best to avoid their parents. Apparently Clark was especially protective of Cooper, letting him tag along in whatever he was doing.
According to Synn, a horrific tragedy had happened to Clark. When Bishop asked about it, Synn said it was the twins’ tale to tell. So far neither twin would talk about it. Bishop had to laugh at that thought. Cooper might not say words out loud, but he managed to make his thoughts perfectly clear. The way Cooper shut down when Bishop asked about the older brother told him that it was a discussion for another time.
“Things are about wrapped up,” Synn said, coming to stand beside Bishop. “Another pink orchid was found in the woods across the road from the mailbox. I’d say he was over there watching at least part of the show.”
Bishop grunted in answer. As far as he was concerned, Oliver’s days were numbered.
Synn’s ancestry contained Creole blood, and when sex came into the picture, his Creole accent came out. His next statements were thick with it. “I think it’s time to take those two pretty men inside. I have to warn you it will be at least until tomorrow morning before you’ll be seeing Craig or me again. And ignore any sounds you be hearing. My baby can get a little loud at times during the passion of love.” Bishop laughed hard at Synn’s understatement concerning the sounds that echoed through the house each night. Sometime the pleading, swearing, and moans coming from the master bedroom were raunchier than porn.
As the last of the law enforcement vehicles drove away, Bishop and Synn headed toward the house.
